How data collection works, the ecosystem

Data collection is a multi-layer ecosystem. At the top are primary data collectors: platforms you directly interact with (Google, Meta, Amazon, your bank, your carrier). These companies collect first-party data, what you tell them directly. They then sell or license this data to secondary collectors: data aggregators like Acxiom, Experian Marketing Services, Oracle Data Cloud, and LiveRamp that build unified consumer profiles. These profiles flow downstream to tertiary consumers: advertisers, direct mailers, people-search sites, insurance underwriters, and employers. Stopping data collection means addressing all three layers.

Layer 1: Primary data collectors, what you can do

1. Google: Go to myaccount.google.com/data-and-privacy. Turn off Web & App Activity, Location History, and YouTube History. Opt out of ad personalization. These changes apply to logged-in browsing.
2. Meta (Facebook/Instagram): Settings → Your Facebook Information → Off-Facebook Activity. Clear history and turn off future off-Facebook activity tracking. Also go to Ad Preferences → Advertisers → and opt out of data-based targeting.
3. Apple: Settings → Privacy → Tracking → turn off "Allow Apps to Request to Track." Also review Location Services, turn off Personalized Ads in App Store settings.
4. Your carrier: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all allow you to opt out of data analytics and third-party marketing programs. Log into your carrier account → Privacy settings → opt out of all data sharing programs.

Layer 2: Data aggregators, opt out of the biggest ones

Layer 3: People-search sites, batch opt-out

The third layer is the 300+ people-search and background-check sites that republish your data in searchable form. These require individual opt-out requests, there is no single master opt-out. Technical controls that reduce ongoing data collection

• Browser: Use Firefox or Brave with uBlock Origin. Enable Global Privacy Control (GPC), a browser-level signal that automatically communicates opt-out preferences to participating sites under CCPA.
• DNS-level blocking: Use a privacy-respecting DNS resolver like NextDNS or Quad9, or run Pi-hole on your home network to block tracker domains at the DNS layer before they load.
• Email: Disable email tracking pixels in your email client (Apple Mail has this built-in; for Gmail, use extensions like PixelBlock). Tracking pixels report your location, device, and when you open emails to the sender.
• VPN: A VPN masks your IP address from websites and prevents your ISP from logging your browsing history. Choose a VPN with a verified no-logs policy (Mullvad, ProtonVPN).
