Why Voter Registration Is Public

Voter-registration records are maintained for election administration, but disclosure rules, available fields, requesters, and confidentiality options vary by state. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission explains that voter files may include registration and voting-history information, never who a person voted for, and that some states offer safety-based confidentiality programs. • Other states: The EAC describes additional state confidentiality programs and expanded categories for some law-enforcement, medical, judicial, or other protected roles. Contact the relevant state or local election authority for the current route.

Do not assume an address-confidentiality program changes every government record or private copy. Confirm the covered record and any exceptions before submitting sensitive information.
