What is data mining and who does it?

Data mining is the process of collecting, analyzing, and profiling individuals using data from multiple sources, purchase history, location signals, browsing behavior, public records, and social media. The primary operators are not the people-search sites most users know; they are the invisible B2B data giants that supply those sites: Acxiom, Oracle Data Cloud (formerly Datalogix/AddThis), Epsilon, LiveRamp, Equifax Marketing Services, and Experian Marketing Services. These companies build consumer profiles on 2–3 billion people and sell segmented audience lists to advertisers, insurers, and financial institutions.

Step-by-step: How to opt out of data mining

  1. Step 1: Submit to Acxiom first. Acxiom is a primary data supplier for hundreds of downstream companies. Opt out at aboutthedata.com, create an account, view your profile, and select "Opt Out of Data Sales." Also submit a full CCPA deletion request at acxiom.com/data-privacy-request.
  2. Step 2: Opt out of Oracle and LiveRamp. These are the dominant identity-resolution and ad-targeting platforms. Oracle's opt-out is at datacloudoptout.oracle.com. LiveRamp's is at liveramp.com/opt-out. These two opt-outs cover a large portion of programmatic ad targeting.
  3. Step 3: Use the NAI and DAA opt-out tools. The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) at optout.networkadvertising.org and the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) at optout.aboutads.info allow one-click opt-out from hundreds of participating ad networks simultaneously.

💡 Tip: NAI/DAA opt-outs are browser-cookie based, they apply only to the browser and device you use. If you clear cookies or switch devices, re-submit. The cookie-less alternative is to use Global Privacy Control (GPC), a browser-level signal supported by Chrome, Firefox, and Brave that automatically communicates your opt-out preference to all participating sites.

  4. Step 4: Submit CCPA/GDPR requests to remaining data miners. Under CCPA § 1798.105 and GDPR Article 17, you can request deletion from any data company operating in California or processing EU/UK residents' data. Use OfflistMe to generate correctly worded deletion requests for all major data brokers and mining companies at once.

What data mining opt-outs do and do not cover

Opting out of data mining reduces your exposure in marketing and ad-targeting databases. It does not remove your data from: (1) people-search sites (these require separate opt-outs), (2) credit reporting (governed by FCRA, separate process), (3) government records (public by law), or (4) data already sold to companies before your opt-out date. Think of data mining opt-outs as stopping the tap, not draining the pipe.

The Faster Alternative: Automated Removal

Instead of navigating complex forms and uploading your ID to verify your identity (which exposes you to more risk), you can send a formal privacy request via email.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I remove my personal info from the internet for free?

The most effective free method is to exercise your rights under CCPA/GDPR. You can send specific 'Opt-Out' emails to each data broker holding your data. Offlist.me automates the generation of these emails for you instantly.

Can I delete everything about me from the internet?

It is difficult to delete *everything*, but you can remove the most damaging records (home address, phone number, relatives) by targeting the major Data Brokers and People Search Sites. Once these sources are clear, Google will eventually de-index the pages.

Does OfflistMe work for old accounts?

OfflistMe focuses on Data Brokers who sell your info without your consent, not old social media accounts you created yourself. For those, you must log in and delete them manually.
