Sternchenvermerk (Swiss Asterisk Mark)
A statutory asterisk (*) mark placed next to telephone directory entries in Switzerland that legally prohibits telemarketers from making unsolicited sales calls.
Full definition
In Switzerland, Article 3(1)(u) of the Federal Act Against Unfair Competition (UWG / LCD) provides that anyone who places a star mark (Sternchenvermerk / astérisque) next to their entry in the telephone directory explicitly refuses commercial marketing contacts. Telemarketers who call a number carrying a Sternchenvermerk commit an unfair competition offense punishable by criminal complaints and fines. It works alongside revDSG deletion rights to prevent unwanted commercial prospecting.
